U, PZI, and Lantus theoretically should give flattish curves, with not a lot of fluctuation through the day/night. This is dependant on residual activity from the previous shot (overlap) keeping the next preshot within a similar range.

As these insulins generally have a slowish onset, shooting the normal dose on what seems a lower preshot, should work to keep the curve nice and flat. As the previous dose peters out, for instance by hr 14-15, the new dose should be starting to work.

Hopefully, what you're seeing, is the way the longer acting insulins are supposed to work! And sometimes, when you get that lowish preshot, you just have to bite the bullet try giving the same dose and testing a few more...
